Fourteen US citizens who were evacuated from a Japanese cruise ship that had been quarantined and recently flown back to the United States on charter flights have tested positive for novel coronavirus.
According to a joint statement from the US Departments of State and Health and Human Services, the passengers are among the more than 300 people removed from the Diamond Princess cruise ship.
US officials were notified that they had tested positive for coronavirus during the evacuation process after passengers had disembarked the ship, the agencies said in the joint statement Monday.
The passengers had been tested two to three days before the evacuation flights, the statement said.
After consultation with HHS officials, including experts from the HHS Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response, the State Department made the decision to allow the 14 individuals, who were in isolation, separated from other passengers, and continued to be asymptomatic, to remain on the aircraft to complete the evacuation process,” the agencies said.
The passengers who tested positive were isolated from the other passengers during the flights, the statement said. And all passengers are being “closely monitored” throughout the flight.
“Anywho become symptomatic will be moved to the specialized containment area, where they will be treated,” the statement said.
After the flights land, any passengers that developed symptoms on the flights and those who had already tested positive will be transported to “an appropriate location for continued isolation and care.”
The remaining passengers will remain under quarantine for 14 days.
Passengers arriving to Travis Air Force Base will be housed in the same facility as evacuees who arrived from Wuhan earlier this month, a spokesperson for the base told CNN. New evacuees will be kept in a separate area of the Westwind Inn on the base, the spokesperson said.
The Wuhan coronavirus death toll has reached 1,770, with more than 71,000 infected.
A teenager has pleaded guilty to the murder and rape of an 18-year-old woman who took him to her home because he was too drunk to go home.
Joseph Trevor, 19, today pleaded guilty to the murder and rape of Megan Newton in Stoke-on-Trent in April last year.
Megan died after she was stabbed eight times in the back in her own home. The killer, who had previously been accused of raping another girl but never prosecuted, strangled Megan until she was unconscious and stabbed her to death, Stoke-on-Trent Live reports.
Trevor had earlier been taken to a police station after he was found with a bag of white powder, which turned out to be ketamine, during a night out.
Adrian Keeling QC, prosecuting, told Stafford Crown Court: “He raped and murdered her in the early hours of April 20. He did so at her flat.
“She invited him back as an act of kindness. He got so drunk on drink and drugs and could not go home to his parents.
“He raped her and stabbed her in the back eight times.”
The prosecutor continued: “He was seen to hide a bag of white powder down his trousers and the police were called.
“He was taken to the police station so officers could undertake a proper search.
“The white powder, ketamine, was found. Police seized the bag and told him he would have to go back at a later stage. They let him out of police custody.
“CCTV shows he went to the town centre to a taxi rank at 3.20am.
“Megan had also gone out that night. She had finished her shift at a fish and chip shop in Trent Vale at 10.20pm, went home and got changed before going out at 11pm.”
And he stated: “There was no evidence the deceased was sexually attracted to him that night or at all.
“It’s likely the sex alone was a trigger for her murder. It seems clear the defendant strangled her with his hands.
“She was unconscious but still probably alive.
“That strangulation would have taken 15 to 30 seconds of neck pressure.
“As the deceased lay there, the defendant got off the bed, armed himself with a knife and stabbed her nine times in the neck region and her back.
“On CCTV, his appearance leaving the flat was remarkably composed.”
Mr Keeling said the defendant later told a psychiatrist he had previously been accused of rape, although he was never prosecuted.
He said the trigger for murder was that Megan said she was sorry for telling people he had raped a girl.
That made him very angry with her. He accepted grabbing her around the throat.
Trevor was later seen walking to a bridge on the A500 with his legs the wrong side of the railings.
Megan was living at a supported housing complex run by charity Arch, which tackles domestic abuse and homelessness.
Her dad, Michael said: “She was so excited about finishing college and talked about going to America to study.
“I am never going to see her grow and blossom into the amazing woman she was going to be. My life has been ripped apart. She was amazing caring, kind, loving, funny young lady.”
Tributes were paid to avid Stoke City fan Megan, who was a keen footballer and coach, following her death.
Samantha Duckers added: “We’ve spent the whole weekend wishing and praying it wasn’t you Meg.
“We are all devastated at your loss and the football community will never be the same without you.
“The girls and staff at Stoke Town are in shock but we will never forget your time with us. Thank you for lighting up our lives, we will miss you Meg.”
The killer initially pleaded not guilty to the charges at a hearing last summer, but today pleaded guilty to murder and two charges of rape.
In a statement after her death, her family said: “Our hearts are broken. Meg was a beautiful young woman who had everything to live for.
“She was in the prime of life, so precious and loving. We adored her.
“She was into sport in a big way. She loved playing football and used to give up her weekends to work as an assistant coach for the under 7s.”

“I thought that the best thing to do was to kidnap her and collect the money from her. Eventually, I kidnapped her.”
Zainab did not survive the torture she was subjected to after being kidnapped as she died from the injuries she sustained. After her friend’s death, Hauwa reportedly ransacked Zainab’s room, took her ATM card and withdrew all the money in her account. She also took her friend’s car which she repainted and sold including other personal belongings.

Seriously I have gotten frustrated with my husband inability to satisfy me in bed, am so tempted to go out and satisfy myself with someone else.
Before I met him, he had dated someone I knew, who spoke well of how good he was in bed and he also assured me of his ability of satisfying a woman in bed when we met. At the time we met he had given his life to Christ and took it seriously, he kept turning down my attempts to make love with him, saying we should wait after marriage. I stood by him because I love him and also became a serious christian too
After marriage, the first time we made love was so disappointing, I thought it was just not one of his best days or maybe his tired but it continued like that every time we made love for 3 years now, am tired.
I feel so trap and want to leave the marriage but am deeply involved in church activities and leadership, am scared of what they will say.
What is even worst is my husband seem to make no attempt towards it, even when I get herbs for him, he rejects them saying he doesn’t believe in taking drugs, I don’t get it at all.
We have a 2 year old son, which is making my decision to leave him even harder. I am so tempted to have sex with Joe, a brother in the choir, who out of control have told me of his feelings for me and I think I like him too, am beginning to loose regard for what’s holding me back.
Please oh what should I do? I need your prayers and advice.
Dear friend, So sorry you married him because you were told he satifies women in bed, and becaue of that you rushed to grab him that now you are assured he is going to give you a good sex.
When you expect much and accept empty promises and Huck in to wrong reasons you will be trapped thereby.
I know as he is not doing well sexually, there must be areas Where he is doing well, and someone can’t be good in every part on life. Encourage him to take the drugs you bought for him.
There is more to Marriage than sex, if a man loves you, cares for you and your kids, takes care of your needs, I think there is no reason you should leave him. The 😈 Devil you know is far more better than the Angel you never know.
Beware, bewarened Don’t allow those who have failed in their marital life to sing divorce song to you to accept.

Ex Bbnaija housemate TBoss this afternoon went live on Instagram to lay curses on a Instagram user who referred to her child as Ugly.
Recall that the ex-BBNaija housemate revealed the face of her daughter for the first time on Valentine’s day, six months after she welcomed her. Trolls left hateful comments under her post, mocking her child and referring to the child as ”ugly.”
In a live video on Instagram which she did this afternoon, TBoss said she was 35 when she found out that she was pregnant and since marriage wasn’t coming for her, she embraced motherhood which she says has been her greatest achievement.
Weeping profusely, the reality TV star said she never wanted to share the photo of her child as she felt it was in the best interest of her daughter not to. However, she was pressured by her family members to share her baby’s photo but trolls were very unkind with their comments.
Picking a negative comment from one MsHafsat, a visibly angry TBoss placed a curse on the IG troll that she will never carry her own child.
Busty Nollywood actress, Cossy Ojiakor has revealed that she used to pimp ladies to pastors in the past.
Speaking in an interview with Saturday beats, she further revealed that a reverend father once fondled her breast and gave her church money.
She concluded by asking her fans not to think they have sinned too much and won’t make heaven.
“Don’t think that your sin is too much and you won’t make heaven. Nobody is perfect. Pastors lead extravagant lives and even travel abroad to ‘carry’ girls. I used to supply ladies to one of those pastors. As a matter of fact, I didn’t know he was a ‘man of God’. His church is very big and he has a large congregation. Also, a reverend father once pressed my breasts and gave me church money. “People should know that God is always willing to forgive because nobody is holy. I’m an evangelist and I’m true to myself. If one is true to oneself, it means that one would be saved by grace. I am an Anglican person. I go to church in my hometown.”

The Supreme Court has affirmed the conviction and 21 years imprisonment handed to a man, Femi Ayoade, who with two others, robbed a motorcycle rider and a passenger of N2,000 in Lagos State, with a toy gun.
Members of five-man panel of the Supreme Court, headed by Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, were unanimous in holding that the appeal by Ayoade, marked: SC/456/2018, was without merit and dismissed it.
Justice Amina Augie held, in the lead judgment, that the appellant failed to establish his claim that the trial court denied him fair hearing.
Justice Augie said: “Speculation aside, I hold the strong view that the Court of Appeal was absolutely right to affirm the decision of the trial court since the appellant was given opportunity to cross-examine PW1 (the 1st prosecution witness), but failed to.
“The trial court created the atmosphere for the fair hearing of the case, but he (Ayoade) failed to take advantage of the opportunities provided to do so.
“So, he cannot accuse the trial court of denying him a fair hearing or find fault with the Court of Appeal for affirming the trial court’s decision.
“Before I round up, I must comment on the issue of his sentence, which Osayaba Giwa-Osagie, Esq., learned counsel for the appellant considered excessive.
“He (counsel) raised the issue at the hearing of the appeal, but there is no ground of appeal, challenging his (appellant’s) sentence, therefore, there is nothing this court can do or say on the issue of his sentence.
“In the final analysis, this appeal lacks merit. It, therefore fails and it is dismissed. The judgment of the court of appeal is affirmed,” Justice Augie said.
Other members of the panel were Justices Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, Paul Galumje and Uwani Abba Aji.
Ayoade and two others were tried before a Lagos State High Court on a two-count charge of conspiracy to commit robbery and robbery.
They were said to have used a toy gun to attack and rob a motorcycle rider and his passenger of a total of N2,000 (N500 from the motorcycle rider and N1,5000 from the passenger).
In a judgment on April 1, 2014, Justice I. O. Kasali found Ayoade guilty as charged, convicted him and sentenced him to 21 years imprisonment.
Ayoade appealed to the Court of Appeal. And, in its judgment on March 2, 2018, the appellate court affirmed the earlier decision of the trial court, which was further affirmed in the Supreme Court judgment delivered on January 24, 2020.

Philippines on Sunday February 2, announced the first coronavirus death outside China and two new cases of the flu-like virus.
The deceased is said to be a 44-year-old Chinese man from Wuhan in Hubei province, the epicenter of the outbreak. Philippines Health Ministry said the Chinese man developed severe pneumonia after being admitted to a government hospital in Manila on January 25. He is also the companion of a 38-year-old Chinese woman who is from Wuhan and the first to test positive for the virus in the Philippines.
Rabindra Abeyasinghe, the World Health Organization representative to the Philippines told newsmen;
“This is the first reported death outside China/
“However, we need to take into mind that this is not a locally acquired case. This patient came from the epicenter of this outbreak.”
China also announced that the death toll from the coronavirus outbreak reached 304 as of the end of Saturday. The country’s National Health Commission further revealed that it has recorded 14,000 coronavirus cases.
The Chinese government has slammed the US’ decision to ban people who have been in China for the last two weeks from travelling into the country from China in order to stop the coronavirus disease from spreading .
Following the coronavirus outbreak worldwide, which the World Health Organization has labelled a global emergency, as the disease has already killed 259 people in China, infected thousands world wide, with 8 cases already recorded in the US, Trump’s administration on Friday decided to ban all flights from China to the country till the disease goes away.
On Friday the U.S. declared a public health emergency and President Trump signed an order blocking the entry of foreign nationals who are not the immediate family of American citizens or permanent residents, if they have visited China within the last 14 days.
But China has slammed the US’ decision even though Australia announced similar measures, while the WHO warned countries to be prepared against an outbreak.
“Certain US officials’ words and actions are neither factual nor appropriate,” China’s foreign affairs ministry spokesman Hua Chunying said in a statement.
“Just as the WHO recommended against travel restrictions, the US rushed to go in the opposite way. Certainly not a gesture of goodwill.”
Just after the WHO declared the epidermic as a global health emergency, WHO representative in Beijing, Gauden Galea said to The Associated Press:
“Countries need to get ready for possible importation in order to identify cases as early as possible and in order to be ready for a domestic outbreak control, if that happens,”
The number of confirmed cases in China has risen to 11,791, surpassing the number in the 2002-03 outbreak of SARS, or Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome.
